May: Autumn accepted to Biotech Development Program
Third year Biophysics graduate student Autumn Pilarski was recently accepted into UM's Biotech Career Development Program. Run by the Fast Forward Medial Innovation office, this structured, cohort-basedd program for STEM graduate students and postdocs guides trainees through development in advance of seeking full-time employment or an internship in any non-academic entity.
April: Elise Research Grant
Pharmacology second year graduate student Elise Tahti was awarded a Research Grant from the UM Rackham Graduate School to support her project on cytochrome P450 enzymes. Nicely done Elise!
April: Olivia attends crystallization workshop
Biological Chemistry graduate student Olivia Kohler-Testa enjoyed learning lots about the National Crystallization Center at the University of Buffalo. Led by Dr. Sarah Bowman, Olivia and her colleagues got experience with high-throughput crystallization screening: 1536 unique, microbatch-under-oil crystallization experiments in a very short period of time.
April: Lab move to new pharmacy building
The Scott Lab has been excited (and working hard) to move from our old building on UM central campus to a brand new College of Pharmacy building on East Huron St. Lots of packing into orange moving bins, unpacking lab equipment and supplies, and organizing the new space.
April: Volunteering at Science Night
The Scott Lab once again supported Science Night at Bishop Elementary School in Yipsilanti, Michigan. This year we ran two slime-making tables with two different types of chemistries. Here postdoc Francesca Brunelli and Pharmacology graduate student Elise Tahti share their chemistry enthusiasm with young potential scientists.
April: Introducing Candidate Elise
Second year Pharmacology Ph.D. student Elise Tahti knocked it out of the park on her candidacy exam! The committee was very impressed with her proposal focused on Sjögren-Larsson Syndrome caused by defects in ALDH3A2, a fatty aldehyde dehydrogenase. Nicely done, Elise! We're celebrating with amazing pastries . . .
March: Research Grant Award
Biophysics graduate student Autumn Pilarski recently received a Research Award from the University of Michigan Rackham Graduate School. The funding will be used to support Autumn's development of a biochemical assay for her cytochrome P450 project.
March: Scott lab at the PSTP symposium
One of the really great things about UM are the opportunities for trainees to present their research and engage with leaders in their fields. This year three Scott Lab PhD trainees Olivia Kohler (Biological Chemistry program), Elise Tahti (Pharmacology program), and Autumn Pilarski (Biophysics program) all presented their current research projects at the annual Pharmacological Sciences Training Program (PSTP) symposium. The event also included great speakers from academic medicine, pharma, and public health sectors.
March: Mentoring Award
March: It's not march without Pi Day
March: Career Day at Zoetis
Biophysics graduate student Autumn Pilarski and Biological Chemistry graduate student Alexi Chabez spent a day at Zoetis learning about their company, approach to developing pharmaceuticals for animals, and different career paths. Thanks to the whole Zoetis team for making this possible! UM students would love to participate again.
February: Brodie Award Lab Celebration
The day of the ASPET Drug Metabolism and Disposition Bernard B. Brodie Award announcement I was very surprised with cake and Champagne, not to mention the HUGE 10-foot banner. I have the best lab ever! The UM College of Pharmacy even did a nice writeup.
January: Jay Gets into Med School
Scott Lab undergraduate and UM senior Jay Tycner's hard work as a UM Biochemistry major, in the research lab, and many hours as an ambulance EMT all paid off with a recent admission to medical school. Way to go Jay!
January: Postdoc Francesca Brunelli highlight
The College of Pharmacy did a great article on postdoctoral fellow Francesca Brunelli, who is in the Postdoctoral Collegiate Fellows Program (PCFP). This fellowship is supporting her as she learns enough biochemistry to match her amazing synthetic chemistry skills and professional skills to become a highly acclaimed PI herself.
January: Elise seminar success
Second year Ph.D. student Elise Tahti gave a wonderful seminar on her CYP3A project to the entire Pharmacology Department. Look for her presenting this work at conferences soon!
January: Welcome rotation students Jo and Gillian
The Scott Lab is delighted to welcome for first-year rotations Gillian Camacho and Jo Ostlund. Gillian is in the Program in Chemical Biology Ph.D. program and did her undergrad in Chemistry at Pennsylvania State University. Jo is in the PIBS (Program in Biomedical Sciences) Ph.D. program and completed her B.S. at Fort Lewis College in Colorado.
